Detective Butler and his partner were investigating a report of stolen turkeys when the suspect fired four shots, hitting both detectives. Detective Butler saw him preparing to shoot his partner again; he fired his own pistol and instantly killed the assailant. Detective Butler died three months later as a result of his injuries.

On September 9, 2008, at 11:23 pm, Officer Diane Gonzalez responded to a reported active violent assault of a female. Tragically while responding she was involved in a motor vehicle accident with a fellow officer who was also responding to the same incident. As a result of the incident, Officer Gonzalez suffered a traumatic brain injury and slipped into a coma. After 13 years and 8 months, Officer Gonzalez succumbed to her injury on January 10, 2022.

Patrolman Hooper gave pursuit of one suspect into the Canal Railroad Line where Patrolman Hooper fell down a decent onto the tracks. Patrolman Hooper severely injured his knee which ultimately caused his death.

The North Haven Police Department suffered an enormous loss with the untimely death of Officer Laffin, who was involved in a motor vehicle accident while in pursuit of a wanted suspect. He was the first department member to lose his life in the line of duty.

On September 2, 2021, Sgt. Brian E. Mohl was supervising the midnight shift at Troop L, Litchfield Barracks. While out on patrol, the cruiser he was operating was overtaken from swift floodwaters covering the roadway which was created due to heavy rain in the area. Sgt. Mohl was able to report that he needed assistance, however he was not in his vehicle when responders arrived. Sgt. Mohl was eventually found farther down the river. Paramedics treated Sgt. Mohl, both in the water and on shore. He was then airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital, where doctors officially confirmed his death.
