Detective Garten age 34, a 8-year veteran was a passenger in a police vehicle, when a vehicle fleeing from the police recklessly drove through a red light crashing into the passenger side of the police vehicle. Detective Garten died as a result of the injuries received from the motor vehicle collision.

On 09/16/2023, Officer Bobby Garten who was in the passenger seat of a patrol car traveling east on Asylum St. and responding to and emergency call.

Officers had attempted to stop a vehicle on Broad St. for a motor vehicle violation and the operator of the vehicle fled from the stop. The fleeing vehicle sped through the intersection of Asylum St. and Broad St. at 10:30 PM colliding in the passenger side of the patrol vehicle, in which Officer Garten was the passenger in.

Officer Garten and the officer driving the cruiser were transported to St. Francis Hospital where Officer Garten succumbed to his injuries. The other officer was admitted in stable condition.

Detective Garten was posthumously promoted to detective.
